Hopes of the Ukrainian FPV community for another bright and multi-stage drone racing season in 2020 were thwarted by COVID-19 and pandemic, which entailed quarantine and cancellation of mass events and festivals. But the Ukrainian Association of Drone Racing (UADR) did not despair and decided to hold at least one stage during the relaxation of quarantine bans. It was also decided to determine the champion of Ukraine in drone racing 2020 in one stage.
The venue was the Mekhanika art factory in Kharkiv - a creative space located in the workshops of the former steam locomotive factory of the late XIX century. The large area of the factory (20 000 m2) and open spaces of the new Megazal allowed to place the track for FPV races taking into account the safety of spectators and compliance with sanitary and epidemiological norms.
Flymod Squad team took part in the races by tradition. This year there was a small number of FPV pilots, but the battle for the first places was not easy. The first day of training and qualification determined the order of pilots according to the best lap time and distributed them in the standings. The familiarity with the compact track was not as easy for pilots as it was on the open-air tracks - every now and then someone hit the metal beams or hung on the fence netting, once a fallen copter caught fire. But in the end all 15 pilots showed lap times and qualified.
Qualification table:
On the second main tournament day the event was announced by RC sports commentator Vitaly Kostenko. It was decided to fly two pilots in each stage, and the championship was held according to the classic Double Elimination system (elimination after two defeats). Despite the huge number of metal structures and trusses around the track, there were no problems with video signals, all pilots were flying at 25mW video transmitter power.
The rules changed on the fly and it was decided to divide the final into three stages, although not all pilots agreed with this. Three pilots - Dmitry Faermark, Alexander Alyoshin and Gennady Kondratyev competed in three heats, for each of which points were awarded according to the place taken at the finish. The title of Ukrainian Champion was at stake, so the final was held in maximum tension - there was practically no time for troubleshooting and crash consequences between the final stages. In the last heat it was not clear who would take the first place, pilots went "nose to nose" at maximum speeds. Literally before the finishing gate Alexander Alyoshin took the lead and left no chance to his rivals. As a result of the sum of points Alexander Alyoshin won, becoming the new champion of Ukraine in drone racing 2020! The pilot of our Flymod Squad Dmitry Faermark took the 3rd place!
Congratulations to the winners and looking forward to the next season!
